Oracle Park is now open for baseball (no restrictions) but we all hope that everyone is vaccinated and covid free.
The Good: The Giants are 27 and 22 as of the 6/1 Phillies game. That’s five games over .500 and good enough for 3rd place (behind LA and the Padres) in the NL West, which is the toughest division in the National League. This baseball season is like reading a good novel and we are only in Chapter two. Every chapter features a different story. This chapter features power (Joc Pederson, Evan Longoria, Tommy LaStella), pitching (Logan Webb, Carlos Rodan, Camilo Doval, Jacob Janis), youth (Luis Gonzales, Donovan Walton, Joey Bart) and defense (Crawford, Yastrzemski).
Gonzales is especially fun to watch. He’s a five-tool player getting his chance at the show, and he's making the most of it with Wade on the IL.
It’s a long season and its early in the year. What will happen next? Can the G-Men overcome the injuries? Can the Giants bullpen (which has been less than stellar, especially in middle relief) recover and hold games for the starters? The roller coaster will continue throughout the year.
While the schedule gets no easier in June, with the Marlins at home (the G-Men also see them in Miami on the current road trip), then the Dodgers and the Royals, there is a good opportunity to catch up in the standings because the G-Men match up well with these teams.
The Bad: The injured list keeps expanding. It will not be until the injured players return that we will really know what this team can do. Belt, Slater, Wade, Duggar, DeSclafini are all out with many ailments, and Longoria (still showing the power that made him an MVP) is battling a sore shoulder. The bright side is this has given some of the young guys (especially Luis Gonzales and Donovan Walton) their chance to show what they can do. We want to see Belt and Wade return but just as much we want to see what Heliot Ramos can do given a proper test and, if he can turn his bat around, Joey Bart. We also don’t want to see any more injuries. It’s time to get healthy.
The Homestand Test Against LA and Colorado (6 Division games) and the Royals: This upcoming homestand will be especially fun. The G-Men have historically done well against the Rockies, but this is the catch up on the LA team, who just got swept by the Bucs in LA. The Dodgers can be had.
We would all love to see players like Joc Pederson (and Belt, if he is ready) come alive against the boys in blue. It is especially gratifying to see Joc send balls into the stratosphere and reduces the pain of missing Kris Bryant. This will be a good series and will set the table for the next road trip against the Pirates and the Braves, both tough teams in the NL East and Central.
It’s time for summer baseball!

THE PROTOCOL: the firm has four seats in Section 118 (Premium Lower Boxes), Rows 25 and 26. These are awesome seats directly below the press box and 25 rows behind home plate on the left side behind the screen. It is foul ball territory for left-handed batters so bring your glove – I have collected 19 foul balls myself over 21 years, am looking for more and caught my latest ball at the Cards game on July 5th [film available!]. If we don’t use all the tickets ourselves (or clients and friends of the firm don't claim them by calling me and reserving a game), then my next step is to give the tickets TO THE FIRST PERSON WHO GETS BACK TO ME PROVIDED THAT THEY ARE SERIOUS. If you ask for the tickets and don't use them, you will be taken off the list unless there is a seriously good reason. There will be a wait list.
When there are four seats available (we split up a lot of games) we will allocate the tickets two and two if the first people back just want two tickets. You can also go for four and might get them. I'm the Czar, my call.
Oh, and BTW, The Czar found the original Hinman & Carmichael brick from 2000 (after looking for it every year since 2000) and found H&C’s Gotham Club Founders Bat! If you are on the patio, or in the Club, look for the symbols of baseball!
