The Memorial Day Weekend is Upon Us and Giants are Ready for June
The G-Men are now in 3rd Place in the NL West, one game below .500 and climbing fast in the NL West standings. The road trip included taking series on the road from the Phillies, Marlins, and Twins before coming home next week for series against the Pirates and the Orioles. Today the Giants face the first-place Brewers at home in what looks like a bullpen game. This weekend is another test against a really good team that will be here in late June.
The key to better playing and the rise in the standings is the veterans coming around (such as Conforto, Estrada, Wade, Yaz, Flores and Crawford) and the kids coming up and showing what they can do. We talked about Schmitt last blog, he is like the energizer bunny, he doesn’t stop hitting. Now he’s been joined by Patrick Bailey (replacing Joey Bart at catcher while Bart recovers from his most recent injury) and Brett Wisely. It’s a youth movement and it bodes well for the future. The draft picks and the farm system are producing justifying the confidence that Farhan has been expressing.
The team is jelling but is still in the middle of the pack. The challenge now is to turn it up another notch and start to challenge the teams above them in the standings – right now the Snakes and that LA team. We don’t face the NL West head-on until June on the road (against the Rockies and the Dodgers), and then home against the Padres and the Snakes.
The pitching has been first-rate – from Logan Webb to Cobb to DeSclafani as starters to the Rogers brothers out of the pen to Camilo Doval, who is a lock for reliever of the month as the best closer in MLB right now with 13 saves and a 1.99 ERA.
Watching this team, especially at home where they are winning, is a joy. The crab sandwiches are delicious, the Irish coffees are legendary, and the cove beckons with visions of 100 splash hits (we are at 99).
The upcoming series against the Pirates and the Orioles
The Pirates are coming into town one game over .500 and in 2nd place (behind the Brewers – whom the G-Men are playing on the road this weekend) in the NL Central. Led by Andrew McCutcheon and Brian Reynolds, with Mitch Keller pitching, this series will be a dogfight.
The Orioles are incredibly hot and have the best record in baseball (32 and 17) short of the Tampa Bay Rays. I don’t know what they are smoking in the AL East (really, Austin Hays at .308 and Ryan Mountcastle with 11 dingers and 32 runs scored) but whatever it is we will see it on display in the next series.
On the board and ready to be picked up are:
MON 5/29 -Pirates [2:05] - 4
TUES 5/30 – Pirates [6:45] -3 – I’m going.
WED 5/31 – Pirates [12:45] - 4
FRI 6/2 – Orioles [7:15] – 3 – I’m going.
SAT 6/3 – Orioles [7:05] - 4 - Logan Webb Bobblehead
Let the torture continue!
Ciao, and GO GIANTS!

THE PROTOCOL: The firm has four seats in Section 118 (Premium Lower Boxes), Rows 25 and 26. These are awesome seats directly below the press box and 25 rows behind home plate on the left side behind the screen. It is foul ball territory for left-handed batters so bring your glove – I have collected 22 foul balls myself over 23 years and am looking for more. If we don’t use all the tickets ourselves (or clients and friends of the firm don't claim them by calling me and reserving a game), then my next step is to give the tickets TO THE FIRST PERSON WHO GETS BACK TO ME PROVIDED THAT THEY ARE SERIOUS. If you ask for the tickets and don't use them, you will be taken off the list unless there is a seriously good reason. There will be a wait list.
When there are four seats available (we split up a lot of games) we will allocate the tickets two and two if the first people back just want two tickets. You can also go for four and might get them. I'm the Czar, my call.
Oh, and BTW, The Czar found the original Hinman & Carmichael brick from 2000 (after looking for it every year since 2000) and found H&C’s Gotham Club Founders Bat! If you are on the patio, or in the Club, look for the symbols of baseball!
